Rotenburo means open-air bathes. This type of the bathes are popular in Japan and many lodging facilities and one-day onsen facilities have their own rotenburo in addition to their indoor bathes, because such type of the bathes allows their guests to enjoy scenery of each season’s rustic atmosphere and beautiful starry sky. As many areas in the City of Nikko have snow from December to February, “yukimi-buro” (taking a hot-spring bath while enjoying snow scenery) is one of the best ways to indulge yourself in the hot-spring resorts in winter.

Japanese Onsen bathing etiquette

In order to get even greater enjoyment from a Japanese Onsen, it is definitely advisable to learn the basic bathing etiquette. By learning these points, you will be able to ensure not only your comfort, but also the comfort of the people around you while you enjoy the Onsen.

1. Before taking a bath

The basic of Japanese Onsen bathing is to pour hot water on yourself or to wash your body before immersing yourself in the Onsen. When pouring hot water on yourself, make sure to pour hot water to the farthest body parts from your heart and to accustom the body to the temperature of hot water. Make your body clean to keep the important Onsen clean and to let everybody enjoy the Onsen without annoyance.

2. While taking a bath

When you soak in the bathtub, do not put your towel in the bathtub and keep the Onsen clean. Swimming in or dive into the bathtub not only annoys other people, but also is very dangerous. In addition, when you finished washing your body in the washing place, make sure to put the chair and bucket on the place where they were, so that other people can use them without annoyance.
Taking pictures in the bathroom is prohibited by almost all the Onsen resorts. Keep the memories of the Onsen only in your hearts!

3. After taking a bath

After enjoying the Onsen, dry your body with a towel before entering to the dressing room. What you need to care most is the time when you take the bath. Take 30 minutes to one hour interval after the meal, before you take the bath. Refrain from bathing after drinking alcohol. After taking bath, make sure to replenish the lost water in your body appropriately.
