Ride a bicycle to enjoy autumn leaves by Lake Chuzenji. Then, you can make a side trip to the Ryuzu Falls, before you walk around the Senjogahara Plateau to view Japanese larch (from the end of September). It is also wonderful to view autumn leaves by Lake Chuzenji from the Italian and British Embassy House Memorial Parks that have architectural masterpieces built in a period from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. Nishi-rokuban Park is the land where Thomas Glover’s villa was built.

Take a bicycle tour on the back roads and little-known places in the Nikko area and walk around the Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park, which was built as the place for Emperor Taisho’s retreat, and the Kanmangafuchi Abyss known for Bake Jizos (disguising jizos). Jakko Falls is an unknown sightseeing spot where you can see the water dropping from the 50m-high waterfall consisting of seven tiers from a close distance. In addition, if you have extra time, it is recommended to experience Nikkobori (Nikko carving) at the Nikko Woodcarving Village Craft Center.

Travel from Imaichi (which was known as a post station in old days) to the World-Heritage Shrines and Temples in Nikko. For the return trip, it is recommended to take the Prefectural Highway 248 running under autumn leaves of the Nikko Daiyagawa Park. You can enjoy walking around the back roads with good atmosphere near the Kezoin Temple as well as the beautiful scenery jointly created by colorful autumn leaves and the World-Heritage Shrines and Temples in Nikko.

Enjoy bicycle riding while going under the autumn leaves by the Watarase River and Mikouchi River. The best places for sightseeing include the Second Watarase River Bridge of the Watarase Railway, and Tsudo and Ahio Stations (both of which are known for the designs of the retro-inspired station buildings). From the river bed of the Mikouchi River, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery created by the fresh stream of the river and autumn leaves.

Kinugawa Onsen (Best Time to View Autumn Leaves: mid-October - late November)

A Course to visit Kinu Tateiwa Otsuribashi (Long Suspension Bridge) and the Kinugawa Gorge Decorated with Autumn Leaves

Kinugawa - Kawaji Onsen

Travel around the autumn leaves viewing spots in the Kinugawa-Onsen area. You can see different faces of the stream from the Otaki Riverside Promenade and Ootoro Suspension Bridge, as well as autumn leaves. Kinu Tateiwa Otsuribashi (Long suspension bridge) is a place that you should not miss in the Kinugawa-Onsen area, because you can view both autumn leaves and tateiwa (odd-shaped rocks) in one glance from there. One-day onsen tours and walking around the hot-spring resort are also recommended.

Yunishigawa Onsen (Best Time to View Autumn Leaves: late September - early November)

A Course to View Autumn Leaves in the Secluded Area around the Yunishigawa River and Heike-No-Sato

Yunishigawa, Kawamata and Okukinu Onsen

Travel to the secluded area called Heike-No-Sato that was once inhabited by the fleeing Heike (Tairas) warriors who were defeated in the battle between the Minamotos and the Tairas in the 12th century. After visiting the Yunishigawa Dam (the newest dam located in the upper portion of the Kinugawa River) you can go to the upstream part of the dam lake and river. Then, walk around Heike-No-Sato, before you take a rest at Mizuno-Sato (rest place) on the Yunishigawa River and Yunishigawa-Onsen.
