In this summer, the city of Nikko offers various participation-type events allowing visitors to see and experience unique culture and performing arts of each area, such as summer festivals and firework display that are Japanese typical summer attraction. In the summer festivals, various types of mikoshi (portable shrines) parade around towns in day time, and Bon Festival dance unique to each area and fireworks display are performed in night time. In yukata (informal cotton kimono for summer), you can enjoy the festivals more, as if you are a Japanese.

Ryuou Festival

Kinugawa - Kawaji Hot Spring

This festival, which starts in the Goryuou Shirine in the Ryuou Valley, is known as the one of the biggest summer events in Kinugawa-Kawaji Hot Spring. The festival provides vibrant parade of various types of mikoshi (portable shrines) and entertainment performance on the stage. Visitor may have an opportunity to participate in the onna-tarumikoshi (portable shrines carried only by females) parade as a carrier (inquiry required).

Nantaisan Tohai Kosha Taisai (Mt.Nantai Worship Climbing Festival)

Okunikko

Having started 1200 years ago, this event is known as the biggest festival in Nikko Futarasan-Jinja Shrine Chugushi. During the festival period, the mountain summit attracts many climbers and worshippers who pray for their health and prosperity of business.

Nikko Summer Fireworks

Imaichi

One of the summer attractions in the Imaich district. Set off from the Daiyagawa River bank near the Daiya Bridge, various types of fireworks, including rapid-fire style fireworks, and big and small ones, decorate the night sky.

Ashiomachi Noryosai (Summer Night Festival)

In this Bon Festival dance, participants dance to the original song that express the labor in the Ashio mine. In addition, fancy-dress competition entertains not only audience, but also participants themselves.

In this event, you are welcomed by fantastic lighting and warm hospitality in rich nature. Music concerts and sales of local cuisine are performed in the venue every day. In addition, visitors can enjoy a day trip to hot spring facilities at only 500 yen, as well as a service to offer maccha (powered tea) for free of charge. Free-of-charge shuttle busses are operated between the venue and Kinugawa hot spring resort area during the festival period.

Participate in the Sport Events to Run through Nikko

Nikko, a city of the World Heritages, holds various participatory events to run through the city, such as marathon races to run on the highway leading to Nikko in late autumn or on World-Heritage Nikko Suginamiki (cedar path), and bicycling events to enjoy the courses utilizing Nikko’s abundant nature.
