What You Should not Miss in the City of Nikko

Seasonal excursion information Summer 2012

Introducing our highly recommended plans for this summer: experience various activities available at Kinugawa and Kawaji Spa!

Hot Spring Summer Festival

Attractions to enjoy at Kinugawa-Kawaji Hot Spring differ from season to season, and, naturally, some of the delights one can only experience during the summer.
Such are the area's summer festivals. Two summer festivals are held on a grand scale in Kinugawa-Kawaji Hot Spring: the "Ryuou Festival" that will be held for the 44th time this year, and the "Hot Spring Summer Festival", during which visitors to the area can enjoy at this hot spring resort the Bon dancing, an indispensable component of Japanese countryside entertainment. The parade floats and skyrockets are truly magnificent, so make sure you do not miss them!

The locality's majestic ravine is a perfect natural stage for rafting, canoeing, canyoning, and many other water activities giving you a great chance to experience the real thrills of the summer. Those of you who want to get an experience of Japan's rich culture should surely visit the hands-on theme park "EDO WONDERLAND Nikko Edomura" located in the vicinity of the Kinugawa-Kawaji Hot Spring. Recreating to the minutest detail the Edo period atmosphere with even people walking in the streets wearing the attire of the times, the park will have your body and soul slip back through history and feel Japan of the old days as if coming alive! It is so authentic you will really feel the smell of the old times.

Plan 1. Major local events and summer festivals: a perfect occasion for a hands-on experience of tradition and culture!

The Ryuou Festival opens with the soul-stirring sounds of Ryuou drums at Goryuou Shrine located in Ryuou Ravine. Various kinds of mikoshi are paraded around the neighborhood of Kinugawa Hot Spring, while folk entertainment performances are held at the stages specially built for the festival. Hot Spring Summer Festival is a great chance to enjoy Bon dancing or the skyrockets flying high up in the night summer skies, while you are feeling the refreshing touch of the river breeze gently touching your skin. Another attraction available during the festival is the Kinugawa Hot Spring Fureaibashi Bridge Beer Garden that will be open from August 10 (Fri.) to August 19 (Sun.) Why not come and participate in the good old Japanese traditions and culture of the locality?

Would you like to try rafting downstream? There is a perfect rafting course filled with variations, going through rapids at times and floating on the calm water at other times. Would you like to sit back in a boat, enjoying the skilful rowing of an experienced boatman? Come and enjoy the strangely shaped rocks of the ravine with their sculpture-like beauty. Canoe and canyoning are other pleasing options. You can rent all the equipment you need, and our attending instructors will make sure that both children and adults, those experienced in the sport and those trying it for the first time can enjoy the activity safely. After playing all day long, don't forget to refresh yourselves at a spa at the hotel or the inn you are staying at. Gentle hot spring water will wash away the fatigue of the day, making your skin moist and lustrous.
