Lake Chuzenji

Oku-Nikko

Lying on the skirt of Mt. Nantaisan, the Chuzenji Lake is located at an altitude of 1,269m, one of the highest locations of Japanese lakes. It is said that this lake was formed by an eruption of Mt. Nantaisan about 20,000 years ago. In the 19th and 20th centuries, villas owned by foreigners and embassies of oversea countries were built in this area and obtained popularity as an international summer resort. A hiking course runs along this 25km-around lake, and visitor can view azalea flowers in early summer, as well as colorful leaves in autumn.

Ryuzu Falls

Oku-Nikko

One of the three great falls in Nikko. The scene that the stream dropping over 210m is diverged to two sides at a big rock is just beautiful. Visitors can enjoy viewing Tougoku-mitsuba-tsutsuji (Rhododendron wadanum), in May and June, as well as colorful leaves of Japanese maples and Japanese lindens in the end of September to the beginning of October.

Kegon Falls

Oku-Nikko

The Kegon Falls, the great falls at a height of 97m, is ranked in the three great falls of Japan. Visitors can fully enjoy magnificent scenery and beautiful formative arts created by the nature. In May, the area is decorated with fresh green of leaves; in June, Asian house martins come flying; and in January and February, whole of the falls is frozen to blue ice. Near the falls, there is an observatory platform allowing visitors to see the basin of falls from the close location (admission-paid),.

  • Address 40 minutes from the Chuzenji Onsen Bus Stop (No. 24), by the buses bound for the JR Nikko Station, and transfer at the Tobu-Nikko Station. 10 minute from the Tobu-Nikko Station by trains bound for the Asakusa Station, and transfer at the Shimoimaichi Station. 20 minute by trains bound for Aizutajima, and getting off at the Kinugawa-onsen Station.

The Kinugawa Onsen originates from the Taki Onsen that was discovered on the west bank of the Kinugawa River in the Edo period. After that, another Onsen gushed forth on the east bank and was named as the Fujiwara Onsen. Since then, people have called combination of these two Onsens as the Kinugawa Onsen, and now the Onsen resort is known as “a place for treat in the Kanto region” and attracts many travelers. This Onsen resort currently has more than 80 hotels and ryokans including modernistic hotels with many guest rooms and open air bathes. The Onsen of Kinugawa has been famous for the effect to heal burn injuries, and has enjoyed the nickname as the “healer of burn injuries” since the old days.

The street decorated with the flowers of about 100 Yoshino cherry trees over 300m is suitable for relaxed walking. The best period to view cherry blossom is the middle of April.

Kinugawa River Boat Tour

Feel yourself being gently rocked by the motion of the boat being guided through the water with the boatman‘s skilful control of the oar, as you enjoy a close-up encounter with the natural wonder of the Kinugawa River, with its seasonally changing faces and sea of richly varied rock forms. Kinugawa Onsen Ropeway

Kinugawa - Kawaji Onsen

A ropeway service to climb 300m in about 4 minutes. On the top of the mountain, visitors can have the panoramic view of the Kinugawa Onsen Resort and Mt. Tsukubasan, and can give foods to dozens of monkeys.

Gokoku Shrine and Onsen Shrine

The Gokoku Shrine located at the foot of Mt. Maruyama and the Onsen Shrine on the top are counted as the vest cherry blossom viewing points in the Kinugawa Onsen Resort. Viewers can enjoy combination of the silhouette of the cheery trees spreading their branches delicately and the beautiful torii (a gateway at the entrance to shrine),. The best period to view cherry blossom is the middle of April.
